Protect your eyes from sun, dust and infection
Strong sun, road dust and seasonal eye infections are common in our region. Simple ways to keep your eyes safe.
In Tripura we have strong sunlight for much of the year, dust on busy roads, and eye infections that spread easily, especially in the rainy season. A few simple habits go a long way.
Sunlight and UV
Years of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light are linked with cataract and other eye problems. Choose sunglasses that block 100% UV (often labelled UV400). Dark lenses without UV protection can do more harm than good, because they make the pupils open wider. Children’s eyes need protection too.
- Wear UV-protective sunglasses or photochromic lenses outdoors.
- A cap or hat with a brim adds extra protection.
- Never look directly at the sun, including during an eclipse.
Dust and two-wheelers
Wear glasses, sunglasses or a helmet visor when riding. If dust gets in your eye, don’t rub it — rinse gently with clean water. If something stays stuck, or the eye stays painful or red, see an eye doctor.
Avoiding eye infections (conjunctivitis)
- Wash your hands often and avoid touching or rubbing your eyes.
- Don’t share towels, handkerchiefs, eye drops or eye make-up.
- If someone at home has red, sticky eyes, keep their towel and pillow separate.
- Don’t use eye drops — especially steroid drops — without a doctor’s advice.
When to see a doctor quickly
Get urgent care for sudden loss of vision, severe eye pain, an injury or chemical splash, or a red eye with blurred vision.
